NOSFERATU TRAILER REACTION (2024): He's Coming!

Focus Features just released the teaser trailer for their Christmas 2024 horror film Nosferatu! It's only been one century since the original came out, starring Max Schrek. The original Nosferatu was a masterclass in German Expressionism, and this update by Robert Eggers appears to pay proper respect to its predecessor. Starring Nicholas Hoult, Lily Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Bill Skarsgard, ...

Having watched these original version of the cat and the canary as well as the man who laughs and the last warning I think the director had a great sense of being able to both terrify as well as making an audience laugh at the horror the way James Whale would do in the old dark house The invisible Man and especially Bride of Frankenstein. I do know that when universal was wanting to do Dracula they had wanted to get him and Conrad Veidt back together to do it but sadly Leni passed away from blood poisoning and Veidt went back to Germany but this film is a great film very much an inspiration for Scooby-Doo in the fact that it's never genuine supernatural it's all criminals scaring people away for money

The desaturation was the ONLY criticism I have about this (it appears in the still images also). And it kind of bums me out because you KNOW those costumes are insane. The only thing I can think of is he is color grading to be similar to the original? The version I watched had greys, blues and orange tints. Although, The Northman was pretty desaturated, but then there were moments in that movie like the Valkyrie scene where the colors POPPED. So maybe he’s going for something similar here?

For me I am super happy that Eggers is directing this, cause it honestly feels like his directing style calls back to experessionist horror, thus making him perfect to direct a Nosferatu remake. the fact that we got that amazing shadow shot of Orloks shadow in the trailier really shows that he is at least paying homage to the old masters of the 20s. I also would liek to point out the scene in the trailer of the men carrying the coffin, that is definitly a call back to the original film, which had a procession of coffins to show the extent of the plauge that Orlok brought to the town. Finally, yes on a summary I read for the film online it will be set in 19th century Germany.

I feel like I've been waiting for this for years! I think I found out about in 2020/21 and was so gutted that they weren't aiming for a 100th anniversary release. Eggers is the best director for this and I'm looking forward to his interpretation. I am also conflicted over what I want. I really enjoyed the 1979 Herzog version, which deviated substantially at times, and part of me wants Eggers to do the same. However, part of me doesn't want it to be so different. One thing I do hope is that Lily Rose-Depp as Mina/Lucy/Ellen has more screen-time than they gave to Isabelle Adjani in the 1977 film. Adjani was perfect in that role but she was such a small part of the film when the Mina character, (called Lucy in the 1979 film), is so pivotal to the story in the original book. As much as I've loved almost every Dracula adaptation, I don't know if I've seen one that gives Mina the credit she is due. Maybe I'm biased, because she is one of my favourite literary characters, but she's basically the hero of the story in my view. She may not kill Dracula but she sacrifices herself to help defeat him, and before that, she does so much to help everyone that kinda goes unnoticed. #JusticeForMina One thing that would be cool is if Isabelle Adjani or Werner Herzog got small cameos in this film as an homage.

Nice that you're reacting to this - just my two cents: if you let it play straight thru first without stopping it and react to the flow of the experience as it proceeds, and just let it wash over you first, because the sense of rhythm and momentum is a big aspect of something like this - and then play it again and the second time freeze the frame at different points, like you're doing now, to get two different kinds of reactions - but of course you have the best judgement re what works best for you

While I enjoyed the look of it, (including the b/w), I sort of found it all over the place (but perhaps that was just me).
